In 1938, the bicycle troops were reorganized and were assigned to the mobile troops, receiving company numbers from nine to sixteen. Each battalion obtained a platoon with five tankettes and a motorized 10.5 cm field howitzer battery. The motorized and cavalry brigades received two bicycle battalions each. New companies were raised and were assigned to border guards battalions.
During 1941–1942, most of the bicycle battalions were dissolved, or converted. Some were used to raise cavalry and tank battalions, while others were used to form army corps’ bicycle battalions. The latter were dissolved in 1943 and their companies were used to form divisional reconnaissance battalions.
Hungary had a long and famous cavalry tradition. In the Hungarian Army, the official designation of cavalry regiments was huszár (hussar). Large formations were called cavalry, while units of hussar regiments were sabre companies.
Horthy’s National Army in 1919 originally had two hussar regiments of two battalions with three sabre and one MG companies plus one engineer and one field telephone platoons. A further two hussar regiments were raised in 1920. The hussar regiments were named after famous historical Hungarian figures:
1st Regiment: ‘Ferenc-József Jász-Kun’
2nd Regiment: ‘Árpád fejedelem’
3rd Regiment: ‘Nádasdy Ferenc’
4th Regiment: ‘Hadik András’
